On World Series Way, a path through Northeastern University's campus, a bronze Cy Young leans in toward a batter who is no longer there. The statue stands where the pitcher's mound of the Huntington Avenue Grounds used to be. From 1901 to 1911 this was the home field of Boston's American League club, the team that became the Red Sox. In October 1903 it hosted the first modern World Series, in which Boston beat Pittsburgh five games to three, with Young pitching the opening game here. On May 5, 1904, he threw a perfect game on the same mound. The sculpture by Robert Shure was dedicated in 1993. About sixty feet away, a granite marker sets out home plate, so you can stand where the batters stood and look back at him across the distance of a pitch.
